"Diamond in the Desert"
Called the "Diamond in the Desert", the City of Elephant Butte is nestled on the shores of New Mexico's largest lake. Elephant Butte Lake's residential community began forming in the 1940s when the lake had filled. The community has always attracted people who love the beauty of the Lake and a quiet and easy lifestyle close to nature. The area has long been known as a retirement and resort area ideal for those with a passion for fishing, boating, golfing, and the splendors of nature. As word spread of the Lake's attractions, more people settled in the area. The city offers a varied selection of gas stations, boat, car and RV sales and service, restaurants, an Inn, realtors, banks, churches, post office, beauty salons, and other service-oriented businesses. The area continued to grow, prompting it in 1998 to incorporate as the City of Elephant Butte. Approximately 1400 people call the City of Elephant Butte home year-round with the summer's lake activities increasing the number to over 3000. This is a community poised for grownth in the years to come.
