Welcome to Sierra County! Birding Pt 2

Welcome to Sierra County, Birding Pt. 2
Water Canyon-16 miles west of Socorro on Highway 60.  Turn left past mile marker 124 and proceed about 6 miles to campground.  Desert grassland at 4,600 feet to Montane Forest, 10,000 feet, provide a broad range of habitats for a wide variety of land birds.  New Mexico Bird Finding Guide says "Water Canyon is especially well known as the northeastern most reliable breeding site for red-faced warblers" (late April to August).  Look for Black-Throated Sparrow, Scaled Quail, Curve-Billed and Crissal Thrashers in the grasslands and Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Say's Phoebe, Ash-Throated Flycather in the Pinon-Juniper zone and higher up the Black-Throated Gray Warbler, Western Tanager, Graces' Warbler, Hermit Thrush and the Red-Faced Warbler...just to name a few.  May through July in Water Canyon is an outstanding site for nocturnal birds such as the Flammulated Owl, Western Screech Owl, Whip-Poor-Will and Common Poorwill.  A must see!  Call 575-854-2381
