Emory Pass..exit 63 off of I-25 and head west on Hwy 152 approximately 35 miles (the scenic route to Silver City). Located in the Black Range at an elevation of over 8,200 feet this area with its walkable trails offers not only panoramic views but wonderful birding in coniferous and mixed forest.
Some southwestern specialties are Painted Redstart, Olive Warbler, Steller's Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Pygmy Nuthatch, Spotted Towhee, Dark-Eyed Junco, Pine Siskin, among others. The area between Hillsboro and Kingston in the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands offers good birding, during breeding season, from marked forest dirt roads that are accessed off of Hwy 152.
